How to verify a TEFL certificate
- Ask the provider for the qualification number and the name of the awarding organisation (not just a logo).
- Search Ofqual's register: open Find a regulated qualification and search the title or number. Confirm the awarding organisation, level and that the status reads Available to learners.
- Match the entry to your course: the register title often names the provider in brackets. Check the guided learning hours match the course you are buying.
- Wales / Northern Ireland: Qualifications Wales publishes QiW; Northern Ireland qualifications are regulated by CCEA Regulation (search on CCEA's site).
- US accreditors: check whether an accrediting body is recognised on the US Department of Education's DAPIP database or by CHEA. DEAC's own directory is at deac.org.
- Check the certificate itself: some providers offer a certificate verification page; use the link on the provider's own domain, not one sent by a third party.
If a register search shows nothing, try a different word from the title. Absence from a register only means the course was not submitted for regulation there - it is not a verdict on quality.
